CAN OBAMA SAVE THE AUTO INDUSTRY?
President-elect Barack Obama jumps into the fray immediately pushing Dubya to push for assistance to the auto industry, and make it a priority, and I like that. Black Enterprise reports that this was one of the many things they talked about when they met, and it makes sense to me. I think the economy has to be fixed from the ground up, and we need to start with fixing it so people can find themselves a good paying job with benefits. “Automobile manufacturing as a whole provides about 20% of country’s revenue and it’s a key incubator for employment in U.S.” says Damon Lester, president of the National Association of Minority Automobile Dealers. I got eyes—I didn’t need him to tell me that.
There used to be a time when you could have just a high school diploma and be able to find work at the Ford or GM plant. My people, like a lot of your folks, worked for a car and truck manufacturer. And I know generations of folks who worked for auto plants but now routinely get laid off or fired. Time to stabilize the base I say. The automakers are riding on fumes and the least the Bush administration could do is help Obama get a running start by doing anything they can by forking over some federal money so they can stay in motion. What do you think?
Do you know anyone who has been affected by the automaker crunch? What should Obama do to fix it?
