COLIN POWELL ENDORSES OBAMA

Former secretary of state Colin Powell has thrown his support behind Sen. Barack Obama for president, but has seemingly done so pretty late in the game. He avoided jumping into the fray of pundits and supporters a year ago, when Obama really needed it. “I think he is a transformational figure, he is a new generation coming onto the world stage, onto the American stage, and for that reason I’ll be voting for Sen. Barack Obama,” Powell said on NBC’s Meet the Press. I guess what I’m wondering is, does his seal of approval even matter now? What was the point of making this big show right at this moment?

Now, that he’s sure there is some consensus, he jumps on the bandwagon. Better late than never, right? But how much better would his endorsement have been if given in the heat of battle, not when Obama jumps ahead in the polls? I don’t know why Powell kept his endorsement until the last possible minute, but I get the sense that he, like many of us, wants to be on the winning side and didn’t want to step out there half-cocked. Also, Powell is a republican, and perhaps he was waiting out the race in hopes he’d see his party represent the way he wanted them to. Well, he’s said he was troubled and frustrated by the tactics of the McCain campaign and not altogether sure about Sen. John McCain’s choice of a running mate, so in that way, he’s not unlike a lot of republicans. But it seems like too little, too late. What do you think?

What took Colin Powell so long to endorse a candidate?  Tell us here.
