OBAMA REJECTS LOBBYIST MONEY
People who keep their promises are hard to find, but worth keeping when you find them. Politicians are known for making promises, but they hardly ever see them through. But there are exceptions. During this campaign, president-elect Barack Obama promised to put the smack down on lobbyist on Capitol Hill who use money and perks to influence policy makers, and it looks like Obama is keeping his promise. Called perhaps “the strictest, the most far-reaching ethics rules of any transition team in history,” by Washington insiders, Obama is pushing back on lobbyist. Obama comes right out the gate with his transition people getting in the dirt and cleaning house in a big way.
He’s not the first to do this—Bill Clinton and George W. Bush gave it a try—but he may be the most successful. Whether or not he gets them out of the White House seems secondary to the fact that Obama seems anxious to keep his promises in a way rare among politicians. Before he even gets to sit in the Big Chair, he’s intent on letting people know he’s about his business. It’s going to be hard for Obama to affect change overnight, but it bodes well for him that he’s laying the groundwork as soon as possible.
