CHECKMATE: MCCAIN AND OBAMA PLAY CHESS
Oh man, it’s on.
In what may be the best game of political hot-potato ever, McCain has changed the stakes. Just like Ali and Mike Tyson, McCain knows that whoever controls the pace of the match, controls the game. So while his move to pause the game and while his plan to check on the most expensive bail-out in American history makes him look like he’s a patriot, this move in fact is designed to slow Obama’s momentum, distract the electorate and allow time for the McCain campaign to regroup and form a new plan as their candidate begins to dip in the polls. McCain has a talent for distraction: bringing Gov. Sarah Palin onboard has done wonders to capture the imagination and distract from real issues.
But his move to try and postpone the debates is a masterstroke of political theatre this country has never seen. It’s a chess move, well played: if Obama doesn’t agree, he’s perceived as unpatriotic. If he does agree, he is perceived as docile and easily flim-flammed, plus, he puts McCain in the driver’s seat. It’s a double-blind, but Obama skillfully took control by suggesting that this time, more than ever, the American public needs to hear what the candidates are saying. This is a move, well-played. This statement pulls him out of check and turns the table on McCain and makes him look like a coward if he doesn’t engage the debate. It puts his ability to multi-task on blast. Who knows if McCain will actually meet Obama at the debate. What do you think?
Should the presidential candidates pause to address the $700 billion dollar bailout? Tell us here.
