ARE YOU GOING BROKE?

It doesn’t matter where you go—whether you’re at church or in the bar, at the mall or in the grocery store, the story is the same—everybody’s broke. You see people asking for spare change and ask yourself if you are missing a career opportunity by not going out with a cup and relying on the kindness of others. The presidential candidates are talking about all this high-level economic theory, but they have to start talking some talk that’s going to impact pockets in the street—not Wall Street, either.  I’m talking about your street and my street. Because, truth be told, panhandling might be the only growth industry going. The Labor Department’s saying as of September, payrolls have been slashed by 159,000 people, but you didn’t need statisticians to tell you that. Everywhere you go, the look is on people’s faces. People are hurting and in need of relief.

The candidates need to talk about how to make jobs reappear and get people back to work and in the black, not the red. I know there can’t be a quick fix, but there has to be a fix, quick. The good thing is, I do sense empathy from McCain and Obama. The bad thing is, I see no hardcore plan to back up all that “feeling.” In short, neither has given me, or anyone a solid way to get Cousin Pookie back to work and off my couch, or at least put some gas in my car. And that is the message more Americans are waiting to hear: after a failed Bush administration, how can we get back on track?

What have either candidates said to you about the economy that gives you hope? Tell us here.Images courtesy of abcnews.com.
