OPRAH CRACKDOWNS ON HER STUDENTS

THE FACTS
All Africa reports Oprah Winfrey has confiscated the cell phones she gave her South African private school students after learning only half of them had passed their June exams.
THE SPIN
Oprah originally gave her students spiffy Samsung E250 cell phones. They have since been replaced by the more modest Nokia 1200, which doesn’t allow access to MXit. MXit is an instant message program for your mobile phone and PC. Instead of studying, a number of the girls spent most of their time hitting up friends and relatives on the phone. That resulted in a number of them failing their exams.
I remember Oprah making a comment that she didn’t open a school in America because she felt (paraphrasing) that American students were a bit materialistic and wouldn’t appreciate the opportunity as much as those in South Africa. Thank you Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy students for proving materialism and short attention spans are not limited to America’s children.

Oprah has given millions of dollars to various inner cities and HBC’s.
The media choose to only highlight specific contributions made by Oprah. Unfortunatly, a lot of us only focus on what we see in the media therefore, creating a negative view of Oprah and her contributions to the black community.
Oprah doesn’t have to prove anything to me or anyone else in America. She needs to continue spending “her” cash anyway “she” feels necessary.
Go Oprah!!!
Oprah has given plenty of money to American interests. She opened a community center (with computers) where she grew up (in Mississippi). She has put over 100 men through Morehouse. She built an entire community for survivors of Katrina. Most importantly, she has served as a role model for everyone, and black americans in particular. She has exemplified hard work and excellence. I would love for Oprah to build a school in the inner city. But the bottom line is that she has used her resources to “do her part” to help others. How many of her critics tutor students, give generously to charity, or have adopted a child?
