WRITER’S GUILD FILES COMPLAINT AGAINST TYLER PERRY

THE FACTS
The New York Times reports that the Writer’s Guild of America has filed a complaint against Tyler Perry over the firing of four writers from Perry’s House of Payne series who were seeking union representation.
THE SPIN
The WGA claims that four LA-based writers were fired last week after negotiations between the Writers Guild and representatives of Mr. Perry’s production company broke down.
The four writers were reportedly working on the development of the new series based on the Tyler Perry play, Meet The Browns, in addition to their positions on the hit TBS show, House of Payne before they were fired. The writers – Kellie Griffin, Christopher Moore, Teri Brown-Jackson and Lamont Ferrell – had sought a union contract because they felt they were underpaid and lacked benefits. Union representation equals better pay (that’s usually more fair), health benefits, and pension. Apparently, the other members of the crew – including the actors and director (Perry) – already have union representation.
An attorney for Tyler Perry claims the writers were in fact fired over the quality of their work and not over trying to unionize the writing staff.
If true, Tyler Perry needs a reality check: Jesus would give benefits.
As a writer, you can figure out where I stand on this. Over the weekend a number of fans have taken to Tyler’s message board to air their thoughts. Some of those comments have since been removed, but if you’d like to chime in, visit http://www.tylerperry.com/_MessageBoard/.
