CHRISTINA MILIAN WAS DUMPED FOR RIHANNA

THE FACTS
In her cover story with Rap-Up magazine, Christina Milian says ex-label Def Jam dropped her to promote Rihanna.

THE SPIN
No offense to Christina Milian, but judging from Rihanna’s career, they seem to have made the best decision. On why she got the boot from Def Jam, Christina told Rap-Up: “It was a budget cut, I believe. [Def Jam] probably got rid of projects like mine to spend the money on [Rihanna].”

Rihanna didn’t take Christina Milian’s spot. Ashanti did. Like eight years ago when Ja Rule mattered Christina was on “Between Me & U” and then decided to release some corny song made for the Disney Channel. That’s when Ashanti swooped in and seized an opportunity.

Also, if I’m not mistaken, I once read Christina saying she passed on “S.O.S.,” which ultimately became a hit for Rihanna.

That’s your bad, Christina. But, now that she’s signed to MySpace records, she seems to be giving fame another try (tenth time’s a charm, ya’ll). And she’s found support from one of her idols.

Christina noted: “I bumped into Janet Jackson at a club. We talked for an hour and I was telling her I don’t know if I’m gonna do this, and she was like, ‘Girl, do not let them stop you. I’m a fan and you make good music.’ She’s a person I actually looked up to growing up, so her telling me that really was the day I was like, ‘I’m not gonna let these people hold me down. It’s time.’”

Even if it’s through the shared hate of Def Jam, it’s nice to see two people connect.

JANET LEAVES DEF JAM

THE FACTS
On his video blog, Rodney Jerkins reveals that Janet Jackson has left Def Jam Records.

THE SPIN
Here’s the video of Rodney Jerkins confirming the rumors that Janet has left Def Jam after only one album: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aR1V1AgdSP4.

I love Janet, but it’s so easy to blame the label for a flop when the truth is she could have had all the promotion in the world and I doubt it would have made much of a difference. Janet’s career was stomped to the ground the second she forgot to bring her bra to the Superbowl. And when she did have a chance to make people forget about all of that with her music, she released trash. Twice. That’s why this album failed: People stopped caring. She’s been stuck on the same come hither look and sound for years and it’s become boring.

Glad to know her tour is doing so well, but if she’s going to be stuck on that kick me, lick me, entice me, excite me shtick she’s been on forever she’ll be doing the butterfly on Dancing With The Stars before she knows it.
